Barry Boneau has established himself as a leader in the architecture scene
with a unique skill for designing with a human conscious.
Barry Boneau was born in Midwest City, Oklahoma, in 1974. Barry’s family
relocated to Chicago, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri during his high school
years. It was during his time in Chicago that Barry fondly began to marvel at
building structures. Barry graduated from the University of Missouri, in 1997,
with a B.S. in Environmental Design, where he became recognized as a superior
interior designer. Then he graduated from the University of Kansas, in 2000,
with a Master of Architecture, where he was an influential member of the
internationally recognized Studio 804.
Barry worked on a series of residential high-rises as a architect at Pappageorge
Haymes, LTD in Chicago, Illinois. He also worked as a furniture designer and
builder prior to his move to New York City. In 2003, Barry moved to New York
City to establish his own practice. He began by renovating loft spaces in
Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Soon thereafter, Barry formed Substance, Inc., a
company dedicated to designing and building with a specialty in metal and
glass applications for restaurants, private residences, commercial buildings,
and public spaces. Among Barry’s most well-known projects are 216 Alabama in
Lawrence, Kansas, (Studio 804) which received National Honor Awards from
several institutions.; the Bowery Hotel in New York; the Hebrew Academy
Synogogue in Manhasset, New York; Barbounia in New York; Poggenpohl in New York;
Metro Marche in New York; and The Source by Wolfgang Puck in the Newsmuseum in
